We're still thinking deeply about what it takes to build a culture of non-violence. Here are our thoughts on it this month.
When people’s needs and concerns go unheard for long periods, they may believe that violence is their only option.
When people resort to violence they are not taking into account the needs of others in the conflict.
The more complex, deep-rooted, lengthy or violent the conflict the more essential a mapping process is, if it is ever to move out of its impasse.
Mapping is equally valuable for our everyday conflicts. It's best when you do it with the other person or group. No, it’s not simple, but the process does work! It can turn opponents into problem-solving partners. |

A few clues to avoid a problem developing into a conflict |
The first thing to learn is that conflicts are part of life, we cant avoid them but we can make life less painful if we anticipate potential conflict and manage it constructively. Here are some clues:
- You have an initial feeling something is wrong - if you stop here and ask yourself "Is there something I could do about this". you may find yourself on a course of action that you would not have occurred to you before. It is relatively easy at this point to handle it.
- If you dont, then you start feeling tension which distorts your perception of the other person so most of what they do becomes weighed with negative attitudes and you worry.

The Festival of Nonviolence |
 Lord Attenborough, The Patrons and Trustees of The Gandhi Foundation have much pleasure in inviting you to participate in "The Festival of Nonviolence" from Tuesday 25th March to Saturday 12th April
The British Library will launch their exhibition “The Life of Gandhi” on Tuesday 25th March 2008. It will mark the 60 years that have passed since his death in January 1948 and will travel around the UK until January 2009. The Gandhi Foundation will hold “The Festival of Nonviolence” in London from 25th March to 12th April to complement the exhibition. The aim of The Festival is to bring to the attention of every Londoner the depth and power of Nonviolence and its ongoing critical relevance in solving many of the major problems of our day - from personal conflicts to the environment.
