Mapping the Problem
We're still thinking deeply about what it takes to build a culture of non-violence. Here are our thoughts on it this month.

When people’s needs and concerns go unheard for long periods, they may believe that violence is their only option.

When people resort to violence they are not taking into account the needs of others in the conflict.

The more complex, deep-rooted, lengthy or violent the conflict the more essential a mapping process is, if it is ever to move out of its impasse.

Mapping is equally valuable for our everyday conflicts. It's best when you do it with the other person or group. No, it’s not simple, but the process does work! It can turn opponents into problem-solving partners.
 
A few clues to avoid a problem developing into a conflict
The first thing to learn is that conflicts are part of life, we cant avoid them but we can make life less painful if we anticipate potential conflict and manage it constructively. Here are some clues:
  • You have an initial feeling something is wrong - if you stop here and ask yourself "Is there something I could do about this". you may find yourself on a course of action that you would not have occurred to you before. It is relatively easy at this point to handle it.

  • If you dont, then you start feeling tension which distorts your perception of the other person so most of what they do becomes weighed with negative attitudes and you worry.

Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum
The Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum will be taking place June 2-4, 2008 in Bonn, Germany.

The topic of this year's forum is "MEDIA IN PEACEBUILDING AND CONFLICT PREVENTION". Renowned representatives from the fields of media and politics, culture and economics, development work and science are invited to help shape new solutions for peace and conflict prevention.

In connection with the Global Media Forum, there is also a website www.dw-world.de/globalmediaforum. This site is an interactive internet portal for the international media development and peace community. By including links and information from other significant sites, we hope to create a network through which researchers, organizations and think tanks can communicate.
 
The Festival of Nonviolence

Lord Attenborough, The Patrons and Trustees of The Gandhi Foundation have much pleasure in inviting you to participate in "The Festival of Nonviolence" from Tuesday 25th March to Saturday 12th April

The British Library will launch their exhibition “The Life of Gandhi” on Tuesday 25th March 2008. It will mark the 60 years that have passed since his death in January 1948 and will travel around the UK until January 2009.

The Gandhi Foundation will hold “The Festival of Nonviolence” in London from 25th March to 12th April to complement the exhibition. The aim of The Festival is to bring to the attention of every Londoner the depth and power of Nonviolence and its ongoing critical relevance in solving many of the major problems of our day - from personal conflicts to the environment.
